Orchester im Treppenhaus

Johanna Ruppert has been a permanent member of the Orchester im Treppenhaus since 2017. She leads the education and outreach division, STEP UP, and is part of the artistic conceptual team of the orchestra.

About the ensemble:

What can classical music do today? The Orchester im Treppenhaus has been working on an expanded concept of concerts for several years. With a playful research drive, it explores the boundaries of the live concert situation, opening doors to new listening experiences, intimate moments, and surprising content. Concerts as an experience. Classical music as a performance. Always with surprising connections to our reality.

The award-winning 20-member ensemble is one of the leading representatives of the innovative classical music scene in Germany and Europe. Through its format developments like DARK ROOM, DARK RIDE, INNER JOURNEY, DATE YOUR MUSIC, YOUR PERSONAL EMERGENCY CONCERT, DISCO, and the Corona production CIRCLES and its further development CIRCLING REALITIES, it conducts research, often in collaboration with video artists, directors, actors, and composers in its laboratory city of Hanover. It is regularly invited to national and international locations and festivals, such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Mozartfest Würzburg, Heidelberger Frühling, Istanbul Music Festival, Klang trifft Kulisse Grafenegg, Bodensee Festival, Oetkerhalle Bielefeld, Thüringer Bachtage, Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Bayerischer Rundfunk Munich, Detect Festival, and the Fusion Festival.

Since 2020, the orchestra has also been organizing the one-month festival SEA SOUNDS on the North Sea island of Norderney each year. In October 2022, the first edition of the KLANGBLASEN in Hanover will begin. Its STEP UP division focuses the ensemble’s educational developments under one roof, engaging strongly in social and cultural politics through workshops, coaching, developments for specific target groups, and many other initiatives.

In 2021, the Orchester im Treppenhaus was awarded the Perspective Prize of the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST.

DUO KARUNA

The duo, consisting of Jessica Kaiser (guitar) and Johanna Ruppert (violin), was founded in 2016 at the University of the Arts in Graz.

In a short time, the two musicians have played their way into the hearts of their listeners. In March 2017, they celebrated their international debut at the Segovia International Guitar Week in Pordenone, Italy. Additionally, they performed at the Festival Internacional de Música de Cámara Monteleón in León, Spain, in December 2017.

Their most recent success: first prize at the North International Music Competition 2018. Furthermore, they won third prize in the chamber music category at the 14th International Enrico Mercatali Competition in Gorizia, Italy, as well as at the 2nd International Chamber Music Competition Braga in Portugal.

Their concert program, featuring works from Béla Bartók to Manuel de Falla, is predominantly inspired by the colors and sounds of folk music, which are particularly well highlighted in the simple yet characterful combination of the two instruments, guitar and violin.

Together, the two musicians strive to evolve the classical concert and think about it in contemporary terms. In the concert format “Encounters,” the duo explores various facets of musical interplay and invites the audience to experience this powerful sense of togetherness.

Their collaboration is characterized by a deep musical understanding of each other. The name KARUNA (feeling with each other) describes their goal of sharing music as a jointly experienced event with the audience.

KLASSIK NAH DRAN FESTIVAL

Johanna Ruppert is the initiator and artistic director of the festival Klassik nah dran, which took place in Zweibrücken in 2017 and 2019.

The festival is inspired by the desire to spark enthusiasm for classical music among young people through innovative concert formats. It aims to break the patterns ingrained in traditional concert settings by presenting diverse and experimental concert programs in unconventional venues.

A special part of the festival is an education project with three schools in Zweibrücken in collaboration with TONALi-TOUR. For this project, musicians will perform concerts in the schools to bring classical music closer to the students and inspire their enthusiasm for it. The organization of these concerts is handled by the students themselves, and the student managers gain skills in the basics of cultural management.
